St John's Barge Oxford
St John's Barge Oxford

Restoration and the Future

The barge is now moored at the Four Pillars Hotel at Sandford-on-Thames, near Oxford, where it is used by the hotel for functions as well as privately by its own members. In addition to providing a beautiful, unique setting for weddings and other functions, the mooring ensures the barge’s essential security.

It has now been lovingly maintained for some fifty years by its original purchasers and others who have joined them. Substantial structural repairs have been carried out and routine maintenance completed. It is currently in very good order – so different from the many others which were broken up or left to rot.

However, the future of this beautiful vessel is wholly dependent on the continued support of its members. In order to secure the long-term preservation of St. John’s Barge, we now urgently need to bring on board additional supporters willing to make a regular contribution to the cost of its ongoing maintenance. Those donating £50 per year or more will, if they wish, be entitled to full membership of the barge Company, to privileged access to the barge, and to a role in determining its management and future.
